Retha Monastery by Michael Jackobo

The scenery around Retha Monastery as seen from a distance. Retha Monastery is the most important monastery in the area of Valtos, of Aitolia and Akarnania Prefecture. It is dedicated to the Birth of the Blessed Virgin and for that reason its feast day in not on the 15th of August but on the 8th of September.
In older times (during the time of the Turkish occupation), possessed people were taken there and the chains that were used to tie them to the columns of the entrance are still visible today along with the marks of their struggle during the exorcism. The frescoes must have been impressive but they are to a large extend damaged from a fire; especially impressive even today, is the fresco with scenes from the Apocalypse in the entrance (at the same area as the chains).
The photo was taken at the road to the monastery, before the village Agia Triada, on a spot where the terrain allows the monastery to became visible through the trees and the bushes of the forest.
