Tino Sehgal’s Performance at the ancient Roman Forum in Athens
Photos taken at the performance by Tino Sehgal at the ancient Roman Forum in Athens. The first part of the performance was in the archaeological site of the Forum itself. People would approach the visitors and they would begin a philosophical conversation as they walked among the ancient ruins. This clearly reflects the popular belief that the ancient agora was a place to discuss philosophy. I have my reservations regarding this belief but the way it was done in Tino Sehgal’s performance was extremely interesting; only too short! The photo shows the end of the talk between a visitor and one of the people who engaged us in conversation.
The second part took place in nearby building where the visitor entered a completely dark room. In there, performers danced, sang and engaged in conversation between them. As the time passed, the eyes grew accustomed to the darkness and the figures or silhouettes of the performers became visible. My only reservation with this part of the performance is that it was too long and I felt it didn’t take advantage of the transition from total blindness to night vision. Nevertheless, it wasn’t bad by itself and my reservation is just a matter of personal opinion. My problem was with the people watching, as some of them decided to check their cell phones at the time of the performance. This second part by its nature, being in total darkness, was not supposed to be photographed, but at some moments the room became illuminated for a couple of seconds and at such a moment I snapped this photo, without any preparation regarding framing and focusing.
In closure, Tino Sehgal’s performance at the ancient Roman Forum of Athens, was an extremely interesting experience and a kind of an event that we need more of!
PS 1: Unfortunately, I couldn’t find an official site for the artist and for that reason I link to his wikipedia article.
PS 2: I need a Sony a7s!
