Hellas, Shopping Paradise by Michael Jackobo
A banner reads “Hellas, Shopping Paradise” while three people are sitting at the end of the road. I took the image at the area of Plaka, in Athens, which is the area that attracts the largest number of tourists in Athens. I find banners and signs like this a bit kitsch and as such, I always have the desire to documents them with my camera, as they are part of the contemporary culture of an area.
When I saw the “Hellas, Shopping Paradise” banner, the first thought was to just take a simple snap but as I had a normal prime lens with me, there was a lot of meaningless space in the frame. So, I included the three people sitting by the wall to turn the image from a simple snap to a street photograph. I also corrected the vertical lines, as the original was annoying and this is the final result.

Hellas, Shopping Paradise
Ένα σημαιάκι γράφει «Hellas, Shopping Paradise» ενώ τρεις άνθρωποι κάθονται στο τέλος του δρόμου˙ η φωτογραφία έχει τραβηχτεί στην Πλάκα. Επιγραφές σαν αυτή μου φαίνονται κιτς και ως τέτοιες, πάντα έχω την διάθεση να τις καταγράψω με τη μηχανή καθώς είναι μέρος της σύγχρονης κουλτούρας μιας περιοχής.
Όταν είδα αυτό το σημαιάκι, η πρώτη μου σκέψη ήταν να κάνω μια απλή λήψη αλλά επειδή είχα μαζί μου έναν κανονικό σταθερό φακό, υπήρχαν πολλά αδιάφορα στοιχεία μέσα στο κάδρο. Έτσι περιέλαβα τους τρεις ανθρώπους που κάθονταν δίπλα στον τοίχο ώστε να μετατρέψω την εικόνα από απλή καταγραφή σε φωτογραφία δρόμου. Διόρθωσα επίσης τις κάθετες γραμμές, που ήταν ενοχλητικές και το τελικό αποτέλεσμα είναι αυτό.
